BETSY FAIR
For fans of Joe 'Hot Chip' Goddard's '90's-inspired synth banger, 'Endless Love', you may fondly recall its stand-out, diaphanous-voiced guest vocalist Betsy, who now steps firmly into the limelight with her very own debut, 'Fair'.
Raised in the hinterlands of Wales (we hear her parents have a goose farm), Betsy's childhood idol Massive Attack has most definitely influenced the stark soulfulness of this tormented ballad. The lush, Hollywood-style string section just makes Betsy's rich vibrato-d words that much achier as she opines 'I know it ain't right, I know it ain't fair, to hold on to love, a love that's no longer there'. You might think this tortured artist's insight into the cycle of doomed love affairs would leave her bitter and miserable, but her conclusion seems to end on an up note. And we're feeling just as optimistic about this phenomenal new talent. -AO
